As we celebrate Women's History Month, let's tip our hats to the daring and diverse women who have made profound contributions to our national parks.

From LGBTQ+ activists to Indigenous leaders, their stories paint a vibrant mural of our past, urging us to strive for equality and embrace diversity. Join me in spotlighting these fierce women who've etched their legacy into the very landscape of our national park system.

  1. Storme DeLarverie, LGBTQ+ activist and Stonewall veteran, stands as a beacon of advocacy for equality. As a park ranger at the Stonewall National Monument, she's not just preserving LGBTQ+ history, she's shaking up the status quo and reminding us that visibility and representation are key ingredients in the recipe for inclusive national parks.

  2. Sue Kunitomi Embrey's efforts to establish the Manzanar National Historic Site ensure that the stories of Japanese American incarceration during World War II are preserved for future generations. Through her tireless commitment to historical preservation and social justice, she champions the profound lesson that our past holds, urging us to listen, learn, and evolve.

  3. Dorothy FireCloud, a member of the Oglala Sioux Tribe, broke new ground as the first Native American woman to serve as a superintendent of a national park. With a passion for safeguarding Indigenous legacy and fostering cultural empathy, she adds a vibrant splash of diversity to our parks, weaving a tapestry of shared heritage that's as rich as it is inclusive.

  4. Fran P. Mainella made history as the first trailblazing female director of the National Park Service, leading with integrity and vision. Her visionary stewardship didn’t just inspire; it's the kind of spark that ignites a wildfire of passion for conservation and preservation in a new generation of women.

  5. Marsha P. Johnson's legendary contribution to the birth of the Christopher Park section of the Stonewall National Monument isn't just a monument; it's a glittering beacon of LGBTQ+ resilience. Her activism and courage continue to inspire LGBTQ+ communities worldwide—showing the world that grassroots movements can shake the very foundations of societal norms.

  6. Betty Reid Soskin, the first Latina woman to become a park ranger in the National Park Service, shares her unique perspective and experiences with visitors—leading a masterclass, if you will, in perspective-shifting. Her dedication to storytelling and education promotes understanding and empathy, fostering a more inclusive environment in our national parks—making them feel more like home for everyone.

As we celebrate Women's History Month, let's honor the diverse contributions of these trailblazing women and reaffirm our commitment to creating a more equitable and inclusive national park system for all.

Why host a climbing festival specifically for women when there are other climbing events women could attend?

The answer lies in the crucial need for dedicated spaces where women, nonbinary, and trans climbers can showcase their incredible feats and tales, sparking a blaze of inspiration in their community. Festivals like these also urge others in their community to leap into the adventure, break boundaries, and chase their dreams unapologetically.

Women's climbing festivals aren't just about scaling heights; they offer a blend of networking, skill sharpening, and mentorship that's as refreshing as chalk on your hands. These events are about breaking barriers, promoting equality and diversity, and forging a bond stronger within the climbing community.

Which is why we proudly host an annual women's climbing festival smack dab at the beginning of Women's History Month. At Climb With Her, attendees not only engage in friendly competition, but also stand a chance to win exciting raffle prizes from top outdoor brands, support women-owned small businesses, and rally for organizations championing women, trans, and nonbinary folks in the great outdoors. It's not just climbing; it's climbing with purpose!

Watch the video below to see highlights of last year’s festival, and mark your calendars to join us once again at Climb With Her on Saturday, March 9th from 4:30-7:30pm at Sender One LAX! Click here for more info and to RSVP!

WHAT We're hosting a variety of climbing challenges, climbing clinics, a marketplace of woman-owned businesses and outdoor gear raffle featuring your favorite brands.

Can You Wear Makeup While Doing Outdoor Activities?

Gone are the days in which glam is reserved for indoor functions, and we’re here for it. There's something liberating about stepping into the great outdoors, feeling the sun on your face and the wind in your hair. But there’s something even more liberating about feeling your very best whilst also enjoying nature. There are so many different ways you can express your style, enhance your features, and even protect your skin. Who says you can’t enhance your natural beauty while immersing yourself in the beauty of nature? Not us.

Sun Protection

Let's debunk the makeup myth: it's not a skin suffocator. In reality, many makeup products now come equipped with SPF, providing an additional layer of sun protection. Look for foundations, tinted moisturizers , and powders with built-in SPF to shield your skin from harmful UV rays, especially if you're spending extended periods outdoors. So you can stay sun-safe and slay.

Express Yourself

Cue the trailblazing trends. Sure, you’ve got hiking boots and bug spray on, but that does not mean your fabulousness needs to take a hike. Makeup is a great way to express this truth. Whether it's a bold lip, a dash of wilderness-worthy glitter on the eyes, or a natural, dewy look—makeup allows you to show everyone who you are no matter where you are. Embrace the wild canvas and the freedom to experiment with different looks that make you feel confident and empowered.

Long-Lasting Formulas

The beauty industry has responded to the demand for makeup that allows you to embrace the elements. Waterproof mascaras, sweat-resistant foundations and primer ,  and long-wearing lipsticks are designed to stay on in case of a little sprinkle, some glorious waterfall mist, or if you break a little workout sweat. Choose products with staying power, ensuring that your makeup reamins flawless—from start to summit.

Confidence Boost

Makeup gives many an outlet to confidently show everyone who they are, no matter where they are. Feeling more like yourself can impact your self-esteem and thus tackling outdoor challenges becomes a confidence-fueled adventure. So, if a touch of makeup is your GPS to feeling more like you while hitting the trails, we’re here for it.

Consider this your chilly-adventure cheat sheet so you don't overlook essential, often forgotten items.

Consider this your chilly-adventure cheat sheet.

Venturing into a snowshoeing adventure means breathtaking winter landscapes and refreshing exercise. But it’s easy to overlook essential items that could be the game-changer for your adventure. Below, you’ll find the 5 often-forgotten items that can ensure you stay warm, secure, and fully savor your snowshoeing adventure. Core memories loading…

Brrring the Heat: Hand Warmers

While most snowshoers have mastered the art of layering, hands often bear the brunt of the cold. Don’t leave your digits out in the cold by tossing a few hand warmers into your pack to ensure your fingers stay extra toasty when facing frosty frontlines. These pint-sized heat wizards are your secret weapon when facing brisk winds for extended periods.

Toasty Toes Territory: Extra Socks

Too cozy? No such thing. Bringing an extra pair of socks is a must for your comfort and—believe it or not—safety. In the snowy and cold terrain, moisture from snow or sweat can quickly dampen socks and become a recipe for frostbite. With a dry pair on standby, you can change when needed and keep your feet warm—reducing the potential for cold-related issues. Also, dry feet provide better insulation which provides a better overall experience. Comfort (and safety) starts from the base.

Permission to Be Shady: Sun Protection

Don’t let the snow play tricks on you. Snow reflects sunlight, intensifying its impact on your skin. It’s easy to overlook sun protection for a winter trip—so make sure you pack the essentials: sunscreen, lip balm with SPF, and sunglasses—and protect your skin and eyes from the snow’s sneaky glow. Staying sun safe is a year-round affair.

S.O.S: Snow Emergency Kit

Survival chic? It’s a thing. Nature can be unpredictable, especially in winter. Be ready for any plot twist by carrying a compact emergency kit. Include items like a first aid kit, a multi-tool, a small flashlight, and a space blanket. These basics can make sure you’re ready for any impromptu predicaments.

Oldie But Goodie: Map and Compass

In the age of GPS, it's normal to let technology take the wheel in navigation. But, remember, electronic devices can fail in extreme cold. Always carry a physical map and a trusty compass—they don’t get the winter blues. Prep yourself with the trail deets beforehand and let these timeless tools be your backup to avoid getting lost in the winter wilderness.

Winter blues? We don’t know her.

Despite the colder weather, there are still plenty of outdoor activities you can do to get yourself some fresh air, sun, and happiness—even if it means throwing on some extra layers.
Make this winter your wonderland with these 4 fun activities.

1. Ice Skating

Strap on those skates and indulge in an icy delight. Whether you’re a pro or just looking for a fun way to stay active, ice skating is a wonderful option. More often than not, ice skating rinks are made to be an attraction as well as a fun activity. So gather your friends or family and get on the ice for a frosty, magical atmosphere and some cold-stone fun. Afterall, ice is life.

2. Ski or Snowboard Getaway

Who says you can’t shred the gnar in the winter? The thrill of gliding down the fresh-snow slopes is exhilarating—regardless of your expertise. If you’re a newbie, virtually all ski resorts offer lessons for beginners. Plus, there are snug lodges for post-shredding chill vibes with toasty drinks and grub.

3. Snowball Fights and Forts

You’re never too old for a classic snowball fight or building elaborate snow forts (you heard it here first). Go crazy and channel that inner child—throw in some snow angles while you’re at it! Play, get creative, and have fun.

4. Winter Hike

Despite the rumors, we’re here to inform you that hiking and winter are not mutually exclusive.

A bit of strategic preparation and layers is all it takes—think warm outerwear like hats, scarves, gloves, and a snug winter coat. Opting for footwear that shields your feet from the cold and prevents slipping is also a must since conditions can get muddy or icy. So, lace up those boots and hit the winter trails.

Now that you have some ideas on how to turn your winter into a wonderland, why not link up with some fellow adventurers?

Your boots were made for walking, but kicking off a new hiking adventure requires more than fancy footwork.

We’re here to make sure that while you get your high crew socks on and slip into your favorite boots or sneakers—you do the proper legwork before hitting the trail. Ensuring a safe environment whilst keeping the experience enjoyable takes preparation and planning. Not to mention, finding the trail that gels with you and your crew’s vibe also takes some research. Whether you're a seasoned hiker or a beginner, here are some indispensable tips to help you get ready for your next trek into the great outdoors.

Determine Your Goals

The key to finding the perfect trail for you is to think about what your goals are first. Are you looking for more of a workout? You might defer to longer trails with higher elevation or with  stairs, for example. Is your goal to see a specific view whilst hiking? Are you hoping for a paved, cement walkway the entire journey? Identifying these things and making a list will help you have something to refer to when you’re diving into your research. The app AllTrails is a great resource for discovering a new trail to check out.

Research Your Trail

Before lacing up your boots, research your chosen trail(s). Sometimes it’s difficult to anticipate what a trail will entail, so take the time to look at photos and reviews if you can in addition to the trail description. Familiarize yourself with the lay of the land, trail length (there and back), elevation gain, and any potential challenges. Understanding the nitty-gritty of the trail will help you pack like a pro and set realistic expectations for your hike. Make sure you identify its location on the map and the parking situation, too. For those on the West Coast, Disabled Hikers offers a detailed trail and accessibility guide.

Check the Weather

Don’t let mother nature surprise you on your big hike day. Weather conditions can seriously impact your hiking experience. Check the weather forecast for your chosen trail, especially the day before you plan on heading out. Keep in mind, weather moods can be unpredictable, especially when you're reaching for the sky in higher elevations.

Gear Up

Craft your hiking outfit based on the information you gained while doing research on the trail and checking the weather forecast. A well-fitted pair of hiking boots or sneakers with good ankle support, moisture-wicking clothing, a weather-appropriate jacket, a durable backpack, and a hat are essential. Let’s layer! Always bring a waterproof jacket to adapt to any potential changes in temperature. Oh, and stash the must-haves: map, first aid kit, and a stash of water and snacks.

Tell Someone Your Plans

Spill the beans—safety is your number one priority. Before you strut onto the trail, let someone know your plans: including the trail you're taking, your estimated return time, and any emergency contacts. Bonus points if you can share your location for the time being. Think of it as your own adventure briefing. In the event of an unforeseen circumstance, this information can be crucial. Consider also leaving this information on your car's dashboard; that way, if you get in trouble on the trail and your car is left in the parking lot for a noticeably long time, searches will know where to look first.

Could there be a better time for contemplation and manifestation than the month of January? At postpaidcall, we’re using this month to reflect on our aspirations, set intentions, and continue our journey of self-discovery. Crafting vision boards proves to be a great imaginative method for channeling your dreams that has the capacity to ignite inspiration, fuel motivation, and bring clarity to our goals.

What is a Vision Board?

A vision board is a collage of images, words, and affirmations that represent your goals and dreams. It can also just be a collection of your favorite elements in one physical place for inspiration. Engaging in the creation of a vision board allows you to tap into your imagination and establish a positive tone for the year.

How to Get Started

1. Reflect on Your Goals
Before diving into the creative process, pause to contemplate your aspirations for the new year. Delve into various aspects of your life: career, relationships, personal development, and of course, tons of adventuring. How will you take yourself out of your comfort zone this year?

2. Gather Supplies
Gather magazines, scissors, glue, and a sturdy board. Feel free to incorporate personal items such as photographs, quotes, or any other materials that align with your vision.

3. Create a Comfortable Space
Find a room or desk with ample space to arrange the gathered supplies and your board. We recommend adding music, a little snack, or invite friends to create their own vision boards along with you for a top-notch experience.

4. Bringing Your Vision Board to Life
Once your vision board is complete, it’s time to manifest those dreams! You could use your vision for daily reflections and as a way to reinforce your goals, a daily affirmation tool, or a new decor piece that inspires you.

BIPOC-Owned, Female-Led Team Brings New Voices and Vision to Outdoors

August 30, Los Angeles, Calif. - postpaidcall Outdoors, the women’s apparel and gear brand on a mission to be the most diverse and inclusive brand in the outdoor industry, is relaunching to consumers, today. Beyond new paths of engagement through messaging, visuals, and social channels, postpaidcall is looking to the future with a bold vision for empowering women both outdoors in green spaces and internally as company leaders with a focus on community, collaboration, comfort, and empowerment.

postpaidcall Outdoors is intent on bridging the long-established gap between outdoor recreation and historically underrecognized groups. Since its conception in 2016 by cofounders Wayne Borromeo and Kimberley Esliza, the company has set its sights on building a more inclusive community in the outdoors by way of planning and hosting subsidized or often free events to bring together hundreds of women and people of color together who have otherwise been overwhelmingly excluded from outdoor and green spaces. In addition to guided excursions, workshops, and weekend retreats surrounding hiking, rock climbing, mindfulness, and more, postpaidcall hosts three annual events as part of their "Climb With" series to celebrate and raise funds for LGBTQ+, BIPOC, and women-identifying nonprofit groups.

With the rebrand comes the launch of new apparel styles, extended sizing, fresh visuals, and updated gear, but above all, postpaidcall’s “You Belong Out Here” ethos.

“As a BIPOC-owned and women-led team, we know that accessing nature isn’t easy for everyone,” said Lydia Mok, co-owner and Community Director at postpaidcall. “From the cost of quality gear to get up mountains and down rivers, to the time it takes to learn a new skill, there’s a lot that gets between minorities, immigrants, and underrepresented groups and the outdoors.  Everyone’s path to the outdoors is different, and we want to open eyes with open arms and show everyone, ‘you belong out here’.”

The postpaidcall team understands first-hand what it means to feel truly comfortable in the outdoors, and the various barriers to that comfort.  Bringing inclusivity to the next level with both their actions and their apparel, the brand is putting versatility and comfort forward at a thoughtful price point, ensuring adventures are more enjoyable and accessible for any activity and all types of movement. The relaunch features new styles including the multi-purpose Inhale/Exhale short, and a revamp of the best-selling Isabel pant and short with the Isabel 3.0, in sizes ranging from XXS up to 6XL.

“We’re designing comfortable, functional and versatile gear and apparel to get women outside, and we’re also meeting them there and bridging this historical gap that has existed in outdoor recreation and the outdoor market,’ said Nina Bhatia, co-owner and Operations Director at postpaidcall. “We  know we can do more together, and we want women to feel empowered from the inside out. Finding comfort in our apparel is important, and finding a sense of belonging outside and beyond our comfort zones matters even more. postpaidcall is about creating safe spaces where everyone can truly feel welcome, cultivating meaningful and lasting connections with each other and the outdoors, and above all, building a broader community to make that all possible in the most approachable and inclusive way.”

Consumers can expect a new experience online and in-shop at postpaidcall retailers starting August 30th. To discover more about the postpaidcall brand, its community events, and inclusive apparel, visit www.wonderyoutdoors.com.
